🫸THE LEANING TOWER OF KYŌTO🫷

Looming over the rooftops behind our Flower Teahouse is one of Kyōto's most iconic symbols...the 46m tall Yasaka-no-tō (八坂の塔).

The pagoda, last rebuilt in 1440, is all that remains of Hōkan-ji (法観寺), considered by some to be the city's oldest temple.

Some theorize that the Yasaka clan, an immigrant family from the mainland known for their horse breeding, founded Hōkan-ji as a worship site in 588.

The path is broken into three parts, renamed each time the gradient of the climb increases.

Beginning at Kōdai-ji is the almost flat 'Ichinenzaka' (一年坂 '1 Year Slope'), leading on to 'Ninenzaka' (二年坂 '2 Year Slope'), and finally the steep 'Sannenzaka' (三年坂 '3 Year Slope').

Waiting at the top of the slopes is Kiyomizu-dera.

Cherry tree falls on man on Sanneizaka steps leading to famous Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto

KYOTO – A man was trapped under a cherry tree that fell on the sloping pathway of steps leading to Kyoto’s landmark Kiyomizu Temple on Tuesday morning.

For Hanatōro around 2400 lanterns would stretch from Shōren-in (青蓮院) to Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺), via Maruyama Park (円山公園-where there are displays of ikebana 生け花), Kōdai-ji (高台寺), Ninnenzaka (二年坂) and Sannenzaka (三年坂).

A rather frightening curse hangs over the 'three' slopes. If you fall on 'Sannenzaka' you will be dead within 3 years, do so on 'Ninenzaka' and you have 2 years only, tumble on 'Ichinenzaka' and you really don't have much time left.

Be careful how you go⏱️😱👣
