Good question from @alienghic in response to my #STFUfriday thread.

A prior thread is linked in the reply but seems cut off.

Q: What type of lawyer?
You want a criminal defense lawyer.

Q: How do you get a lawyer if you're actually arrested?
1. Best to have a name in mind, even if you've never spoken to the person (although that's better).

When looking, avoid billboard lawyers. Good lawyers are busy enough that they generally don't need to advertise.

As with every #STFUfriday post, I'm a lawyer in the USA. These comments are based on law in the USA. (And they apply to all people in the USA, whether or not they are citizens.) Some US states provide more protections than this. /end

It’s #STFUfriday!

When cops ask you questions, ask for a lawyer and then STFU:

- I am not discussing how I’m doing or where I’m going.

- Am I free to leave?

- I am not answering any questions.

- If they ask to search anything: "I do not consent to a search."

- I want to talk to a lawyer.

What if the cops don't arrest you but they keep coming back? 🧵

Let's say you start talking to the cops. You realize that was a bad decision (you will). You have the right to change your mind and stop talking at any time. Don't compound your mistake. STFU. Lawyer. /1

I don't answer questions

The whole thing is obscene.

You got arrested. You can’t make bail. The only calls you can make are collect calls from the jail.

The calls are recorded and monitored. You have no choice!

STFU about the case on those calls! 🧵

@chronohart #STFUfriday is for everyone. STFUfriday is for the children. STFUfriday is for the people.

Happy #STFUFriday! Remember kids: don't talk to cops.
