Fighting the climate zombies - a chat with meterologist Jim Dale
The 2024/25 talk season of Scientist Rebellion is about to start! Every year we host Zoom seminars with people who have distinguished themselves in research and advocacy around the climate breakdown we are facing. Our guest of the week is Jim Dale. Founder and senior meteorological consultant, Jim was born in Manchester, England in December 1960. Qualified as a meteorological observer at the Royal Navy’s School of Meteorology & Oceanography, he served as a meteorologist in the Fleet Air Arm during the early to mid 1980′s. Jim founded British Weather Services in September 1987. He is the author of ‘Weather or Not? – The Personal & Commercial
Impacts of Weather & Climate’ (2020); and the co-author of

It’s the time of year; morning mist and fog provide the background and the rest is in your imagination… or perhaps not!
I’m Jim N R Dale, founder and senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, author of two in-vogue books, and a media prowler. I take it to them, I tell it like it is and I take no prisoners, I am a zombie killer! You see, when it comes to the stories entwined within climate change; I don’t have to run scared, I simply join up all the hideous dots and say it out loud. I come up against the monsters and the ghouls, though of late they are running scared and even running away. There are many disturbing things to consider in our climate graveyard, including the claim of weather manipulation, but hey, that’s just weird!
So come with me into the night, get to know what I do and why I do it. It may well be the end of the world as we know it but arm yourself and find the light!

Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Scientist Rebellion Talks: "How economic growth is fueling the climate emergency" - a conversation with Growth Kills activists. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.
Growth Kills asserts that the main obstacle standing between us and avoiding runaway climate heating is our blind pursuit of infinite economic growth.
Our so-called "leaders" keep repeating the lie that GDP growth is compatible with the necessary ecological transition, yet it has been proven that there is no current (and likely no future) way to disconnect GDP growth and resource use from increased greenhouse gas emissions*.
Elected officials are promising "green technofixes" that are either unproven, overly expensive, unable to be scaled up, or a mixture of all three—and which will only further accelerate inequality.
Fantasy-based solutions (e.g., carbon capture and storage) are just another way to funnel billions into the pockets of the wealthy— money that could be better spent on proven mitigations to curb emissions and protect us all.
Such lies serve to dangerously placate the public by telling them what they want to hear: "nothing about your life has to change".
Another lie is that economic growth results in human well-being: studies have shown that beyond a baseline level, there isn’t any correlation between economic growth and human development or happiness.
GDP is only a narrow measure of the welfare of capitalism, not the welfare of people.
Do we want to keep accelerating profits for the few or create well-being for all?
There is only one real, adult, logical solution: to produce and consume drastically less.
Unlike planetary boundaries, which are governed by natural law, our economic system is a choice, and we have the power to choose a better economic system that actually values and supports life.
We can either choose between a controlled reduction of unnecessary sectors, goods, and jobs, or witness the horrendous collapse of everything we need.
