I’ve updated my runestone website and added scanned 3D models to some pages.

One of the stones with a 3D model is the runestone U 1125 which has an inscription in elder futhark and ornamentation of a person holding up their hands. There is also an inscription on one if the back sides that can be viewed by rotating the model on the page.

I’ve also restructured the pages so it will be easier to add new runestones. And I added a Swedish version of the site where I plan to post a few longer descriptions.

I’m in Uppsala at a full day conference on runestones from Småland. There have been two talks heavy on place names and personal names. The first talk of the afternoon is about the runes “rufRa” on the runestone Sm 93 from Nömme.

I just sent in a paper on the two runestones DR 271 Tullstorp and N A222 Ervik for the course in viking runes in Norway and Denmark. They are pretty different, one is a big standing stone with beautiful ornamental images, and the other is a small stone that is completely covered with runes.

I’ve started to look at another runestone trip this summer. I definitely want to include Sparlösa, and Karlevi on Öland. I also want to visit some stones in Småland that mention travels to England. While I’m that far south I might as well visit some stones in Blekinge, like Björketorp and Stentofta. I’d like to visit Tulltorp in Scania as well, as I’m supposed to write a paper on it soon. But I think Scania would be a whole trip on its own. If I’m going to Öland, I’d also like to visit Sandby hill fort, and the rest of the runestones that I missed last time. But that would probably also take too much time.

To promote the video about the runestones of Ingvar the Far-Travelled’s disastrous viking raid, I created the website https://www.varangianbiker.com/

It has pages on each runestone, with pictures and inscription for them. Many have a tracing of the inscription to make it easier to read, and some have a longer description of the runestone. I have longer description of some of the stones that I need to add, so it will get updated at some point.

Varangian Biker

I'm the Varangian Biker. I’ve ridden my motorcycle to visit viking runestones about Ingvar the Far-Travelled in Sweden.

Varangian Biker

A couple of years ago I started visiting runestones on my motorcycle. The first 30 runestones I rode to were all about the viking expedition led by Ingvar the Far Travelled in the year 1041. It’s the event with most runestones raised after it, and there’s also an Icelandic viking saga written about it. The expedition went to the east on rivers down to the Black sea, and it ended disastrously, and most didn’t make it back alive.

I made a video with photos and videos of the runestones I visited.

I have since visited over a hundred more runestones, and I’m planning on creating more videos about them someday.

Someone has made an online map to track all the runestones you have visited. It’s new, so it has some minor issues, but it seems pretty neat.
