I'm 2/3 of the way through Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice, and I’m starting to get a bit depressed. I know it’s 30 year old, and we recognize abuse and trauma differently now. But it’s… a lot.

I’m trying to use this book as an escape from the horrors of the real world, and I’m very concerned at this point that it’s not gonna work for me… There’s so little justice in it, just overwhelming misfortune in the life of a young child as he grows up, completely at the mercy of things outside of his control. It’s bleak.

Please, someone who has read it—please tell me there’s some redemption in the end. Because at this point I can’t wait to finish nine books in the series to get there. Hobb does an excellent job of depicting tiny hope and that’s what’s so crushing. She’s an excellent storyteller that is twisting my heart. I’m not sure I can put myself through this…
