An Orkney Wedding, with Sunris...
48% through Wheel of Time book 9. I’m out. I can’t go on. One spanking too many. I won’t make it through another description of Rands coat and which cuff buttons are buttoned. Thousands of pages in and I just don’t care about any of the characters. Maybe Min.
I’m done, I don’t often quit a book or series but this is insufferable.
Just wrapped up Eye of the World. Think I’ll take a break for a day or two before diving into The Great Hunt.
One down, fourteen to go! 🤦♂️
For years, I've been blaming the late #RobertJordan for bloated books (and #GrrMartin, to some extent), but this morning it occurred to me that he was just following in the footsteps of #StephenKing, and maybe #DanielleSteel.
I never even thought of #JKR (granted I try to think of her as little as I can).
My main offender was the late #RobertJordan.
I still have his first three Wheel of Time books, which I insist are brilliant, but everything after from book four to nine I tossed. I never even looked at the books written by the second guy.
I'm sorry, I should explain.
My last line was NOT meant to be a #dig at #ChinaMiéville. It's meant to be a dig at how #BLOATED #fantasy and #sciencefiction became since the 1990s.
As a young adult, I got burned out by #RobertJordan's #WheelofTime, THEN made the mistake of starting #GeorgeMartin's #Asoiaf (a mistake I corrected by putting "A Clash of Kings" down halfway through).
In the 1970s, #MichaelMoorcock proved you could write epics in less than 200 pages. A lesson I wish wasn't lost.
