Finding the will

In the foreword to the latest “World Report” from Human Rights Watch, the organisation notes that crises do not come from nowhere. They are cultivated by governments that do not uphold their obligations to their people. “Left unchecked,” the report says, “the egregious actions of abusive governments escalate, cementing the belief that corruption, censorship, impunity, and violence are the most effective tools to achieve their aims. Ignoring human rights violations carries a heavy cost, and the ripple effects should not be underestimated.”

The overarching lesson of 2022? We need to reimagine how power in the world is exercised.

Governments don’t just have the opportunity but the responsibility to take action to protect human rights within and beyond their borders.

'And while the US Supreme Court struck down 50 years of federal protection for reproductive rights, the "green wave" of abortion rights expansions in Latin America--notably Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico--offers a compelling counternarrative.'
