The slides for my talk “The Anti-Dystopians’ Guide to Generative AI – for students & educators” are now on line. They are based on the guide of the same title written by Alina Utrata.

The Anti-Dystopians’ Guide to Generative AI • Wim Vanderbauwhede

Slides based on the original guide by Alina Utrata

"Je suis écrit dans des transes, dans des moments de grâce. Mon odeur pendant l’orage ou quelques lignes de code en attendant la visite d’un·e ami·e. On me dit vaporeux, mais quand je me développe sous des doigts qui me connaissent par cœur, alors le monde est cohérent. "

Now AI is everywhere, behind every text input, every search bar and every timeline, it is time to re-enchant pre-AI behaviors to rise them to a new nature that is not only defined by “non-AI”. Those tools, contents, will be the exception, maybe fruits of some sort of new privilege. It is not just about resisting AI, it is also about designing how desirable and accessible this privilege can be.

Next up for reading. The AI Con by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna and then Resisting AI by Dan McQuillan.

Rereading "Resisting AI. An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence" by Dan MQuillan, 2022.
Trying to deepen in his argument of the resonances and affinities between the technologies of AI themselves and fascism. They have to do with classification and discrimination and the reinforcement of power structures as they are. With the black box character of neural networks' computation, the practices of datafication and optimization, the option of technosolutionism vs attempting to understand structural causes... Let's see if I can make a clear blog post synthesizing the topic...
I believe it isn't a very obvious argument. It might have sounded hyperbolic some years ago. But now it sounds pretty explanatory of nowadays developments.

Finished a first reading of Dan McQuillan's "Resisting AI. An Anti-fascist Approach of Artificial Intelligence" (2022). Should probably read it again... Very good read.

It has two clearly differentiated parts. The first part, which is an analysis and critique of AI as it is and t performs right now (not speculations about its future), I found extraordinary, and scary. It makes clear connections between AI, particularly in its social applications, and discrimination, violence, necropolitics and para-fascism. It is quite amazing how some things written in 2022 were so prescient of today in 2025.

The second part dealing with more general principles and ideas about how to socially build an "Anti-fascist AI", I found less consistent. As AI for McQuillam needs to be understood as a multilayer "apparatus" of technologies, institutions and ideology, the change would mean building another "apparatus" --- let's say, a non capitalistic apparatus. And this of course will be a long and complex practical project...

@motorhueso did you read it?!

I should try to write a more detailed review, especially about the arguments in the first part, that I believe are not so obvious for everyone. At least they weren't for me.
