Reptyle – Blazed Shades & Thorned Veils
“Blazed Shades & Thorned Veils” is a new release by Reptyle, an outstanding German band based in Bielefeld. It’s their first piece of work this year, arriving after “Decrypt The Void,” a critically acclaimed full-length album released in 2021 that you should also check out as soon as possible. Besides bringing back keyboardist Andreas “Kufi” Schulze to the lineup, the new album also features numerous innovations in songwriting, composition, arrangement, and production, showcasing a natural progression from an already experienced and incredible band. Lyrically, “Blazed Shades & Thorned Veils” explored various sentiments, moods, situations, and circumstances, making it a highly relatable material that will immediately resonate with the broader auditorium. Sonically, Reptyle combines many complementary music genres and various approaches, techniques, and directions in order to depict a luxuriant sonic imagery that immediately wraps around the listening apparatus, grabs you by the collar, and immediately transports you to a completely different realm. Perhaps goth rock comes to mind first, as all fundamental elements of the genre are dominant from start to finish, but do not be surprised if you stumble upon some of the finest properties borrowed from post-punk, darkwave, shoegaze, and alternative lurking around. They use all these additional sonic ingredients as more than necessary enhancements, accentuations, decorations, and other details to uplift their music to an entirely new level while simultaneously remaining loyal to the primary sonic direction. Therefore, “Blazed Shades & Thorned Veils” will immediately appeal not only to the goth rock fans but anyone who appreciates cleverly assembled and flawlessly performed music.

The song arrives with lush synth and guitar works, intricate basslines, excellent drumming performance, and powerful vocals. Each element sits perfectly in the mix, offering a marvelous listening experience worth repeating over and over again. Their sound further evolves with tracks such as “Never Complain,” “Souls’ Damnation,” and “Raging Somberness,” where the band brings even more complexity to the table. The interplays between guitars shape a perfect backdrop for the vocals to shine upon, with all those catchy, memorable, engaging chord progressions and riffs perfectly pairing marvelous themes, melodies, and harmonies. In the meantime, the keyboards deliver one of the finest performances you’ll hear on contemporary goth rock. Whether ambient pads and chord progressions or more leads, themes, and melodies, the keys and synths play a significant role in constructing such memorable segments of these songs. The vocals continuously elevate these and all other songs to new heights by guiding listeners through each section, commanding attention, and emphasizing everything the remainder of the band intended to achieve. You’ll also notice how on tracks like “Damascene,” “Gallow Watcher,” “Silence And The Cold,” “Ultimate Negotiation” feature more nuanced, melodic, calmer yet equally commanding vocal harmonies that contribute tremendous emotional depth and complexity over an already intricate structures. There are also additional vocal layers and back vocals, applied on all the right places for more anthemic vibes. Such clever additions that work like a charm.
Of course, this release wouldn’t be complete without the rock-solid rhythm section, throughout the entire album, you’ll notice how vividly hearable, warm-sounding, intricate basslines rumble beneath guitars and synths, offering more than necessary heaviness, clarity, and depth. These rich, deep, dense, and heavy low ends contribute more groove and detail. Tracks like “Ultimate Negation,” “Reptile,” “Remix The Dead,” and “Anyway Grateful” exemplify the importance of a voluminous bass guitar, especially in genres such as goth rock and post-punk. Of course, you’ll notice the bass guitar throughout the entire album, but during these tracks, this significant instrument reigns supreme. The exceptional drumming performance rounds the entire story with wisely assembled, flawlessly performed, well-accentuated beats, breaks, fills, and other percussive acrobatics keeping everything in line while dictating groove and pace. The band also included “Never Complain – Whispers In The Shadow” remix featuring Ashley Dayour and a live rendition of “Into Her Desert,” such neat additions where the band demonstrates their willingness to explore further with their sound. “Blazed Shades & Thorned Veils” is a goth rock masterpiece where Reptyle not only showcases their songwriting and composing abilities, but also shows how modern and old-school elements of the genre could and should merge together into a colossal slab of harmonious instrumentation. The band delivered a comprehensive collection of profoundly emotive, soulful, dark, hypnotic, and irresistible songs that will immediately tackle all of your senses.
