Washington.- El economista Kevin Warsh se convirtió este miércoles en el nuevo presidente de la Reserva Federal estadounidense después de que el Senado aprobara su candidatura para dirigir el banco central de la primera economía mundial por 54 votos a favor y 45 en contra.

La disciplina de partido fue total a excepción del senador demócrata por Pensilvania, John Fetterman, que votó a favor de la nominación de Warsh.

El economista de 53 años se convierte así en el décimoséptimo presidente de la Fed y sustituye en el cargo a Jerome Powell, que ha estado en el puesto desde 2018 tras haber sido nominado también por Trump durante su primer mandato (2016-2021).

No obstante, tras su regreso a la Casa Blanca en 2025, el republicano emprendió una campaña en contra de Powell al considerar que la Fed mantenía demasiados altos los tipos de interés.

¿Kevin Warsh ajustará la política monetaria al deseo de Trump?

Al nominar en enero a Warsh para pilotar la política monetaria estadounidense Trump se ha mostrado convencido de que el exfinanciero con amplia experiencia en Wall Street aplicará una gestión más expansiva.

Sin embargo, los analistas sostienen que resulta complicado que la Fed apueste de inmediato por la flexibilización en un momento en que la inflación en Estados Unidos se acerca al 4 % impulsada por la guerra contra Irán y el cierre del estrecho de Ormuz.

El nuevo presidente de la Reserva Federal ha trabajado para gigantes financieros como Morgan Stanley y ya fue gobernador de la Reserva Federal durante la crisis financiera de 2008, en la que actuó como puente entre el banco central y Wall Street.

El propio Trump ya había descartado a Warsh en primera instancia en 2017, cuando el magnate neoyorquino se decantó finalmente por Powell para sustituir a la entonces presidenta de la Fed Janet Yellen.

Powell permanece en la Fed

El propio Powell, acosado por la Casa Blanca desde el año pasado, ha decidido a su vez, en contra de la tradición, permanecer como miembro de la Junta de Gobernadores tras abandonar la presidencia este viernes.

Powell ha dicho que permanecerá como gobernador al menos hasta que la investigación interna que lleva cabo la propia Fed a instancias de Trump «concluya de manera definitiva y transparente».

La Administración Trump acusó a Powell de malversar fondos para la renovación de la sede de la Fed en Washington, imputación retirada después de que un juez federal considerara que estaba motivada políticamente y de que un senador republicano amenazara con no apoyar el nombramiento de Warsh si el Departamento de Justicia no abandonaba el caso. –sn–
