Awesome! I have achieved to install /e/OS in a Xiaomi Redmi 4A with an Android 7 version and quite old firmware, following essentially https://doc.e.foundation/devices/Mi8917/install

First, I didn't have any experience with smartphones, so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=padZSv1wxFI helped me to insert my SIM card in the Redmi 4A (from a classic old Nokia).

Second, after installing adb and fastboot, fastboot didn't find the device. It only worked after installing the suitable drive: https://beebom.com/fastboot-not-detecting-device-windows-10/

Third, in order to enable USB debugging, https://www.tenorshare.com/android-data/enable-usb-debugging-android-7-nougat.html helped me too.

But certainly, the most difficult part was unlocking the bootloader. First, a Mi account must be created on the Android smartphone. It didn't work on the Xiaomi's website.
Second, running the Mi Unlock app was not very informative. I had to re-link/bound the Mi account in "Mi Unlock Status" (https://xdaforums.com/t/need-help-bad-couldnt-verify-device-cant-get-info-cant-unlock-my-bootloader.3953948/, https://romprovider.com/solved-couldnt-unlock-cant-get-info-connect/) using SIM data (instead of WiFi), and then, it worked doing this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I-rBM4QdN4

Finally, to flash the recovery image and the next steps, https://community.e.foundation/t/xiaomi-mi-6x-not-taking-e-os-recovery/52871/2 was a big help.
