Well, that’s one way to solve a mystery. ‘The Red Angel’ steps up and answers the question that has been plaguing us all season long. It also stops to introduce a few new questions because, well, if we didn’t have things to speculate about we might stop watching. We are also reminded of just how tight the Discovery crew is, with some possible indications that we might finally see the crew as they were at the very beginning of the season. Less a few Enterprise crew members, but all the better for it. Let’s begin with the final departure of Airiam. Not really wanting to make light of a funeral I won’t spend a lot of time on this issue, but I have mixed feelings about this entire scene. Last weeks episode provided a powerful, emotional goodbye to a character that we’d only barely gotten to know. Part of that not knowing is what made her exit so affecting. To this week then spend a good chunk of the episode having various cast members give all the reasons why they will miss her takes away a bit from the place we were left. I’m almost surprised we didn’t get Admiral Cornwall’s reminiscing on her non-existent time with Airiam thrown in. Ok, maybe I’m being a little harsh, but I would have liked to see the funeral scene maybe be a bit more subdued, keeping in line with the fact that we’d just mourned a character we hardly knew. Relationships from last season that have definitely been put to the test last season also finally get a little revisit this episode. The direction that Stamets and Culber are taking can be a little heartbreaking, especially considering the initial excitement that the show had unburied it’s gay. It does seem that eventually, we’ll get these two back together, but you can’t help but want to push that along. I’m not as convinced by Burnham and Tyler though. Something is feeling a little rushed by Burnham accepting him back. Yes, yes, she was on the verge of voluntarily dying, but this is also the man who trusts an agency that is responsible for her entire life. He also chose a life in the Klingon Empire with his ex Klingon lover over her last season. Maybe just a tiny bit more hesitation would be appropriate? Speaking of Michael’s entire life (here come the spoileriest spoilers, if you want to stop now), the revelation of the identity of the red angel was…unexpected. I suppose the hints have been there all season. We’ve been given a lot of pause to stop and think about who Michael’s real parents were so in a way the revelation should have been somewhat easy to pick out before now. I wonder how this ties to Michael’s past exactly though. At what point in Michael’s timeline is her mother traveling from? I suppose this could be the ‘fix’ to the continuity the producers have been promising and we’ll get a third ‘Star Trek’ timeline out of this. The original, the Kelvin timeline from the later movies, and now the Michael timeline. That wouldn’t explain Spock never mentioning a sister though since it appears the divergence would start after the introduction of Michael. Still, time travel. It can be best not to over explain it. And does anyone really think Leland is dead?
Now that we are seven episodes into the second season of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ one might have thought we’d know a little more about the mysterious Red Angel that has been popping up, but we still know precious little. Thanks to Saru’s vision being more refined than those who have seen the apparition, we know that the Angel appears to be humanoid. With that revelation comes more speculation, and here are my additions to that game. To me, it seems that whoever is wearing the red angel garb has some connection to Michael and Spock. While the reason for their travels through time might be different, the end result will be about the same. Phillippa Georgiou: Ever since it was revealed that the former Terran Empire ruler was coming over to our universe and joining Section 31, we’ve been expecting something more from Georgiou. She has appeared to be languishing under the command of Leland and that can only mean that she is up to something else from what we know of the character so far. Appearances would also seemingly put her at odds with Section 31 as so far as yet she appears to be assisting Discovery and Michael Burnham, often in direct odds with what Section 31′s mission was at the time. My guess is that she will eventually uncover something that will necessitate time travel to fix. Perhaps she is trying to fix the situation that Section 31 created - Michael Burnham becoming an orphan and going to live with Sarek, Amanda, and Spock. Being a member of Section 31 would likely give her access to the equipment to do so and maybe, just maybe, that equipment has an angel-like appearance to it? Amanda Grayson: Spock’s mother would have a compelling reason to need access to time traveling equipment. It is after all her son who is at the heart of this mystery. It’s also to her son that the Angel has appeared to the most, and at critical junctions in his timeline. Amanda Grayson hasn’t historically had a lot to do onscreen in the ‘Star Trek’ universe other than reminding Spock of his humanity or argue with Sarek about same, but she’s shown a bit more in ‘Discovery’. Her theft of Spock’s medical records may just be the tip of an iceberg when it comes to what she’ll do to protect her son. There is one problem in the theory of the angel being her and the show could address its problematic canon with a timeline correction done by Amanda - she could stop Michael’s parents from dying. The logistics of making that work while not completely invalidating the show give me something of a migraine, but it is within the realm of possibility. Michael Burnham: As with Amanda, this would be another way to have a time-traveling character ‘fix’ the timeline, and create a Spock that in just 9 years time (in the ‘Star Trek’ universe) will never mention ever having a sister. This one is a bit harder to work around. It’s hard to imagine wiping out your relationship with your adoptive family just to reunite with a family you hardly knew, but it isn’t impossible. Or maybe this issue isn’t one that the show will touch, and Michael and Spock will end the season still brother and sister. Either way, Burnham would be an interesting choice as the angel. Putting her in that position also somewhat puts her in the ‘god’ position on the show, having rescued the Federation twice in two seasons. That stretches credibility a fair amount. We’ll see what the producers have in mind though. Of course, those are the three main candidates. That isn’t to say that there aren’t other possibilities. Airiam emerged as one after ‘Light and Shadows’. She ‘absorbed’ the virus that was affecting Discovery in that episode, and that virus seems tied to something from the future. My money is on Section 31 being responsible for this so it could explain the red angel aspect as well, though it seems like A LOT of explanation would be necessary here when there are clearer paths already laid out. Hopefully, we’ll get a further lead this week!
