Apparently reCAPTCHA is rolling out this thing where they want to link your mobile device to your browser for verification? This is just incredible entitlement on their part, and it's a horrible idea for privacy.

PSA: You can click the eye icon at the bottom to get a traditional visual challenge instead, or the headphone icon for an audio challenge.

The site has a few variant domains, unsure why, and archive.md, the one I'd been using, threw the QR reCaptcha just now, as per the attached image, while archive.today directly threw the good ol' "try to verify a dozen times" version.

The recaptcha may appear even when the user is not using a VPN if it grows suspicious, meaning the site may soon be inaccessible without bending to Google.

Heute ist mir tatsächlich das erste Mal ein #reCaptcha mit QR-Code begegnet.

Das sieht wirklich unfassbar dämlich aus mit einem großen QR-Code und der Aufforderung, das jetzt mit dem Handy zu scannen.

Immerhin konnte ich noch umschalten und wie gewohnt raten, welches Kästchen nun Ampel ist und welches nicht.

Nö!

Noch funktioniert das visuelle Captcha. Also Autos, Brücken, Berge, Fahrräder und Zebrastreifen suchen... In der Tiefetage einfach das Auge anklicken.

One of the reasons why @mediascopegroup, when building websites for clients and hosting them, does not use/recommend Google reCaptcha system is that it gives too much power to a single company. This is bad for user experience and business.

Positioning Google or other company as digital gatekeeper creates more risks and - in long-term - is harmful for everyone: people, companies, organizations.

To those who make websites for themselves or others, strongly consider ditching Google reCaptcha system and choose better solutions.
