#RandomUnsolicitedOpinion (a series)
It seems like the writers of the current third season of Euphoria really hate the characters played by Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and especially poor Jacob Elordi. I haven’t seen the first two seasons yet, I just jumped in at the beginning of the 3rd season.
Normally I’m a fan of the Doomed, Decadent Teenagers genre (see especially Bully [2001]). Euphoria seems
like an almost cartoonish imitation of Tarantino, but the way the writers mistreat their main characters borders on torture porn, especially Jacob Elordi. But there’s a gallows humor to it that pokes you in the eye every so often.
It seems like Zendaya’s character Rue (as in, she will rue every choice she makes) is the protagonist of the story. Always naïve, always hopeful, always misjudging people by skipping over their dangerous egotism, she wanders from abuse to abuse only to miraculously emerge from some imminent death threat, never wiser for the experience. She’s Pauline in The Perils of Pauline, a less talented Becky Sharp from Vanity Fair (the Thackeray novel, not the magazine).
Are you watching Euphoria? Are you hate-watching it? Over at Vulture there are lots of people who hate this third season. What do you think of it?
