RepoScope: An AI-supported database to build a navigable network of drug repurposing prior art
<p xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" class="first" dir="auto" id="d1204512e83">Drug repurposing projects require comprehensive evaluation of relevant prior research before formalization. While peer-reviewed literature searching is fundamental in life sciences education, patent document analysis remains specialized and often overlooked. Patent literature provides orthogonal information to peer-reviewed publications, frequently disclosing findings that appear in academic literature much later or not at all. Understanding the intellectual property landscape enables researchers to avoid projects with limited patentability potential while directing investments toward promising opportunities. However, searching patent documents for repurposing content presents significant challenges. </p><p xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" dir="auto" id="d1204512e85">The Horizon Europe REPO4EU project is developing RepoScope, a comprehensive text-based database covering international patent disclosures published since 2010 relevant to drug repurposing, supplemented by peer-reviewed literature. Currently, RepoScope encompasses over 1,000 active ingredients with repurposing claims targeting over 500 disease conditions and 350+ molecular targets. AI-powered functionality enables users to interact with the knowledge graph through natural language queries, with visualization capabilities providing multiple analytical perspectives. Although a work in progress, the database has already supported several projects, as well as a series of repurposing landscape publications (1,2,3). </p><p xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" dir="auto" id="d1204512e87">RepoScope will serve as a key component of the Drug Repurposing Platform under development by REPO4EU through 2027, providing a unique resource for researchers seeking novel therapeutic applications for established active compounds. </p><p xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" dir="auto" id="d1204512e89">This project has received funding from the European Unionβs Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101057619 (Precision drug REPurpOsing For EUrope and the world). </p>
