California’s Prop. 36 promised ‘mass treatment’ for defendants. A new study shows how it’s going

The biggest study yet on California’s tough-on-crime ballot measure Proposition 36 shows few people are finding their way into the treatment it promised.

I am delighted that California's #Prop36 was approved by our voters. Michelle Parris complained that "Voters are asking elected officials for real solutions to crime, not mass incarceration." A real solution to crime is to imprison career criminals, which is what #Prop36 does. #CriminalJustice
"How Proposition 36 convinced Californians to vote against their political views" was the title of a grossly misleading article written in @CALMatters, apparently by a soft-on-crime extremist who is out of step with voters in California who overwhelmingly voted for #Prop36. Before this Proposition was passed, stealing $900.00 was treated as a minor crime, and that is crazy because it encourages theft. #CriminalJustice #crime

* #Prop32 - Yes. Why: we're all for inflation adjusting the minimum wage.

* #Prop33 - No. Why: the provision to "prohibit the state from limiting the ability of cities and counties to maintain, enact, or expand residential rent-control ordinances" is a step too far, allowing growth adverse cities a potentially powerful loop-hole.

* #Prop34 - No. Why: way too strangely specific for a state prop, clearly targeting a single organization. Would vote yes in a heartbeat for a more generalized prop, but not this.

* #Prop35 - Yes. Why: we get that this limits a key budget balancing tool, but that's part of the problem. We need to find ways to balance the budget without playing games with medi-cal services (we've seen this personally).

* #Prop36 - No. Why: there are retail theft problems and drug problems, but mandating state prison and charging new felonies is not a solution.

#Prop36 is a false solution to real problems. It would take a huge step backwards in California’s progress by reverting us back to the failed policy era of “tough on crime” and “three strikes.”

Proposition 36 would create a new “three strikes” policy. We know these don’t work and create more violence as offenders seek to avoid a third arrest that could turn into a felony conviction. Let’s not have more police chases and armed showdowns on our streets.

Will Prop 36 mean more deportations?
