I picked this book because the systems I’m designing (a virtual reality platform and operating system #vros) have a lot in common with video game design, or at least have similar priorities, and will be simple and “old-fashioned” on purpose.

To an extent this is related to the stuff we talked about around #ProjektAleph , one being a stepping-stone toward the other (or vice-versa).

@vertigo that helps.

Hey I’ve been working on a new thing that is at least in spirit (maybe stretching it) related to #ProjektAleph .

It is a small portable machine made just for writing, little more than a custom planck keyboard and a 40x4 LCD character display.

How it relates is that at some point I want to try to make the heart of it out of an #fpga running a sort of SoC compatible with my subleq #pvm

I’ll probably start by using an AVR (so I can prototype around and #arduino), and also to keep it all simple.

Anyway, this is my most recent insane whim.

@vertigo

I haven’t read the entire thing yet but this tune is very familiar (even the specific example, I spent a few years in data engineering and this drove me crazy).

I agree that what we’ve discussed for #projektaleph is a way out, and this even pairs nicely with the Swyft/Cat stuff as well (it was all memory-based).

I’ll read the rest shortly and maybe have more to say, but I wanted to confirm this asap because I think it’s 100% the right direction.

@lproven

@vertigo I pictured #ProjektAleph to be akin to an SBC whereas what I’m noodling on here would be a complete system.

But it could definitely have an aleph heart ❤️

@vertigo to that end I’ve been wondering if there is intersection with some of the ideas/goals we’ve been exploring with #ProjektAleph , even if only the idea of building the thing up from “scratch” from fpga fabric.

If I get “serious” about forth I definitely want something cool to run it on, and capable of some of the projects I’ve had in mind for awhile.

@vertigo now we could only get @requiem to make a website for #ProjektAleph >__>

@vertigo this has come full circle, I saw @neauoire other post and now remember what #uxn is 😁

It’s awesome, and I’d love to entangle #ProjektAleph in it 😇

@thebluewizard there is not a lot to describe yet, but it started as a result of conversations with several folks at hackers.town about creating a more open alternative to things like RaspberryPi using FPGA (which had recently alienated a large segment of their audience).

Since then it had mostly been @vertigo and I slowly iterating on a design in between interruptions by our physical lives 🤣

Once we have a more coherent idea of what the first iteration/component looks like we’ll share something more permanent but for now I’ve just been collecting thoughts and discussions under the #ProjektAleph tag.

So @vertigo i’m still rebounding from the last few weeks but I’ve been slowly thinking about #ProjektAleph and my current thinking is very granular.

Building on the interconnect we’ve been discussing, I’m imagining a “cellular” approach, A single cell composed of say one FPGA (and support circuitry) that functions like a microcontroller or PLU, a pair of cells like an SoC, three cells like an SBC, four or more like a PC, etc.)

These cells could be on the same board (maybe even chip?), or across multiple boards, etc.

This thinking descends from my thoughts on applications like process automation (hvac, irrigation, charge controllers, etc.), a CNC, a music player, a communications device, an entertainment system, a general-purpose computer, etc.

You know, all the stuff we like to build 😁

I think this is largely comparable with what we’ve been talking about but I wanted to mention it just because this is where my head is at and I don’t have a lot more capacity at the moment to do more than mention it 🤣

So a little medical surprise has thrown a wrench in my personal hackathon this week, but it's settled-out a bit now and I'm hoping to still salvage some of the extra time I have.

Hoping to throw at least a few hours at #ProjektAleph and #ApresWeb if not #iwagtetw and an assortment of other plans I had...
