"There are now competing visions of what exactly cybernetic software is supposed to do. Stafford Beer thinks it's a tool for the people. Others on the team take a more limited view. Seeing it as nothing but an experimental tool for managing the economy. And a prototype really. And a technocratic one at that."

Merchant: Remembering Cybersyn, Chile's attempt at tech utopia

Fifty years ago, a violent coup cut short one of the boldest tech experiments in history: the attempt to run the entire economy of Chile from a single computer.

I read Evgeny Morozov’s book To Save Everything, Click Here a few years ago and found it frustrating. It’s about the “folly of technological solutionism” so, while I agreed with the broad argument, I thought he presented it in an annoying way.
Here, Morozov is interviewed about his podcast The Santiago Boys, which explores into […]

The iconic ops room of #ProjectCybersyn has been reconstructed for the exhibition »Cómo diseñar una revolución: La vía chilena al diseño« (How to Design a Revolution: The Chilean Way to Design) which just opened at the Centro Cultural La Moneda - a cultural center just next to the building, where Salvador Allende died 50 years ago today:

Produktion: Dlf/WDR 2020. Redaktion: Joachim Dicks. Verfügbar bis 12.10.2023. https://ndr.de/radiokunst

Monday is the 50th anniversary of the coup d'état against Allende's democratically-elected government of Chile and with it the end to #ProjectCybersyn: an experimental computer network for the distributed management of the economy. Here are several well produced podcasts capturing the hopes and dreams about technology during this unique time:

Project Cybersyn - 99% Invisible

On September 11, 1973, a military junta violently took control of Chile, which was led at the time by President Salvador Allende. Allende had become president in a free and democratic election. After the military coup, General Augusto Pinochet took power and ruled Chile as a dictator until 1990. The military regime dissolved the congress, took

@Tfox OTOH there are cyberneticists that believe we could have had this decades ago. See #TheVenusProject and #ProjectCybersyn though I do agree we're aiming for a higher degree of functionality and complexity now than before.
