Just saw Ocean's 8 (2018?), the one with an all-female crew of cons. I saw it didn't do amazing on imdb or rottentomatoes, and (you can forgive me because of So Many Events) for thinking the low rating was just a bunch of butt-hurt incels. Of course maybe it was partly because of that, but I think I agree it gets a B+ or so.
It's not the acting; those actors nailed it, providing plausible, visceral performances with enough little twists and quirks to make it not only believable but delightful. But actors can only do so much. The writing, I think, missed something. There's little or no tension. I'm not one of those "there always has to be tension in stories" people, but this is a cheesy heist movie, not Bergman. It was too easy. There was too little suspense, and a little too much deus ex. It was too much like dessert and not enough like a meal. It's really hard, I think, to get the tension/suspense just right, and this movie slipped a bit.
It's also quite possible that, after half a dozen Ocean's movies, the dusting of wonder just can't be reapplied at this point. Maybe.
I did enjoy it, and might watch it again sometime. If they make an Ocean's 9, I'll see it with high hopes. This one was worth the time spent watching it, but not much more. Tasty but not filling.
And let it be said once again that Helena Bonham Carter can do no wrong, always and forever, amen.
