I've been playing pkmn silver on my train rides to work and I'm surprised how far I've gotten, just something about those graphics is so… Cozy. I WANT to like soul silver more because its quality of life improvements and pretty graphics but I keep coming back to regular ol Silver

Kanto is rapidly running out of gym battles, we have two left. But, we must deal with Blaine before I discuss the nonsense that was Blue.

Poor Blaine is found, crying, in Seafoam Islands. A volcano wiped out Cinnabar Island, leaving only the Pokemon Center standing, convenient.

Well, sorry buddy, I am here to give you more to cry about.

Houndoom was my weapon of choice here. Sadly, Houndoom doesn't learn Crunch until level 52, and my limit is 50. So biting Blaine will have to suffice.

Of Blaine's three pokemon (seriously. Why did Brock have so many?!), the real threat here is Magcargo, a fire/rock type with the dangerously inaccurate Rock Slide.

Turns out biting molten snails is an effective means of dealing with them. Dark moves are not resisted by Rock, and Dark moves count as special attacks, apparently!

This battle was over ridiculously quickly, so quick I forgot to take a mid battle screenshot!

That just leaves Blue for the Kanto gyms now.

Right, we're back with some more Kanto adventures. Apologies for not putting this out sooner.

We only have two more type-based gyms to deal with, so let's start with Sabrina. A Psychic type gym.
Psychic types were ridiculously powerful in the first Gen, so much so that they brought in Dark types as a hard counter.

Originally, I was going to field something like Hypno, a Pokemon with respectable attack for a Psychic type, as well as the attack boosting move meditate!

Then I remembered Lugia was a Psychic/Flying! Why is it Psychic? God knows, but it makes it viable for the achievement.
As I am playing Silver, I have access to Lugia's unique attack Aeroblast, a 110 power flying type move, which would be keyed off Lugia 90 base attack stat.

Aeroblast also features a higher than normal crit chance, so even with just 5 PP, Lugia was able to breeze through Sabrina's 3 Pokemon alone.

Ummm... I think we should be checking Surge's hard drive.
I appreciate that the player character is supposed to be 11... But little boy? That makes my skin crawl.

Well, I am just glad I am here to lay the smack down then.

I thought I was being smart with having Lanturn for Misty, as it doubles up as a viable choice for Surge!

But it turns out that was unnecessary. Now, Ampharos didn't sweep. In fact, it was quite a close solo battle. Surge has two Electrodes that can use self-destruct, which is a very powerful move. Graciously, we only took and tanked one of those.
It should also be noted that Ampharos is a slow, special attacker with a rather mediocre attack stat. Magneton might have been problematic, as it could resist all my attacks, by Ampharos pulled through. Barely.

But even if Ampharos had fallen, I was confident that Lanturn would be able to finish the fight.

So, compared to Brock, I was feeling confident with Misty. Even though water types can be quite versatile, they aren't that great against themselves, as most can't learn electric or grass attacks, with the exception of Starmie, who can be taught Thunderbolt.

So Lanturn was the perfect hard counter to her. Even if her Starmie had thunderbolt, Lanturn was not weak to it due to their electric typing.

Even then, Lanturn had Leftovers and a surprising amount of bulk. The biggest cause for concern was Quagsire, a water/ground type. But, as we can see, we finish the fight against Misty with barely a scratch on my lovely Lanturn!

What I will say is, Misty is looking darn cute with that Gen 2 sprite! Or is it just me?

There is something I find absolutely hilarious about this event in Generation 2 of #Pokemon

Before you can challenge Misty at Cerulean gym, you totally have to gate crash her date she is having at Cerulean Cape, by Bill's House.

I feel we have interrupted a bit of a booty call, though I have to wonder why the guy makes himself scarce, unless he really didn't want to be there and we just saved his bacon...?

So, I finally settled on a strategy, and that was to utilise the X-Attacks to boost Aerodactyl's Earthquake power.

I did mess up the first time I tried this, as usually Brock sends out his Rhyhorn after Graveller. But when I led with Aerodactyl, he went straight to Omastar.

I got a lucky critical hit, which resulted in beating Omastar, and I thought I was in for smooth sailing after that.
No. Kabutops knows surf and can also OHKO my pokemon....

So the... 7th battle, I think, against Brock. We set up the X-attacks against his graveller, which was not without risk. Graveller knows Rollout and got two hits on my Aerodactyl.
But after that, Aerodactyl was able to sweep the team with just 9HP because silly me, I forgot to give him the leftovers.

Anyway, with all that said and done, I was reclaimed my Boulder Badge and the Kanto Gym stomp can truly begin!

This is getting embarrassing...

I have officially handed in my Kanto League Boulder Badge.

Even with support, Don and I have been struggling to defeat Brock of Pewter city.

Now, we are a couple of levels under the level limit, but we are getting mad walled by Brock's Omastar, we haven't even reached Kabutops yet, which my little brother has described as, and I quote, "Rude".

Even Aerodactyl, who has a respectable amount of Special Defense and is only 2x weak to water attacks was OHKO'd by Omaster.

I have another option, because I can utilise items, I can throw down some revives, or even buff Aerodactyl with some X-Attacks, I only need two of them to boost Earthquake's damage by 2x, which should beat Omastar...

Again, as mentioned previously, I watch a lot of Jrose11's Pokemon challenge videos, and he typically doesn't use items in battle (besides hold items), so that is just a further limitation I have put on myself.

#Pokemon #PokemonSilver

Right, I believe I am all ready for the Kanto gyms that require specific types of Pokemon for the RetroAchievements.

I have provided myself some grace on the levels as I don't want to accidentally go over the level limit during the gym battle.

We (the traded) Rhydon with surf for Brock: level limit 45.

Lanturn for Misty: Level limit 47

Ampharos for Surge: Level limit 46

Lugia for Sabrina: Level limit 48

Houndoom for Blaine: Level limit 50.

I chose Ampharos because they are one of my little brother's favourite pokemon, especially Mega Ampharos, with his glorious hair!
Ampharos might be slow for an electric type but has a decent amount of bulk behind them.

Sadly, Houndoom hasn't learnt Crunch yet. I was hoping it would, as I was hoping it would make mincemeat of Blaine. Bite will have to suffice, I guess.

Anyway, wish me luck, folks!

So, it took several hours to get to this point!

But I have managed to bag the three legendary beasts!
I was getting annoyed with being unable to use repels to make it easier to encounter them, so I trained up a Jynx and made sure she didn't go over level 40.

Annoyingly, the first time I encountered Suicune with Jynx was the time I actually caught them... I'm not bitter about that at all!

With that now done, I can return to Kanto and finish up the gyms.

What? The roaming Kanto Legendary Bird? I mean... *Sigh* I could start looking, I suppose...

EDIT: I just checked, I seem to have been mistaken. I thought one of the Kanto birds was a roaming Pokemon, and you only got one of them depending on which starter you selected.
I may be conflating this with a different game! This is good news for me!
