1910s Eureka waist overall -- back pocket
The pocket stitch design is not merely decorative; it holds the reinforcement lining inside the pocket. The denim below the curved stitch line shows vertical wrinkles, as the pocket lining has shrunk in width more than the denim.
I chose this stitch design for a number of reasons. First, it is very functional and suited to holding the reinforcement lining where it is most needed, namely the lower inner area of the pocket. Next, it is easy and fast to sew, either with a single-needle machine, a double-needle lockstitch machine, or even a double-needle chainstitch machine. Finally, it is more interesting than a simple straight horizontal stitch. When I decided on this design, I wasn't aware yet that Montgomery Ward actually used a very similar design.
