I mentioned in a previous post that the standout characteristic of this late '70s - early '80s Roebucks-type jacket is the simplification of its construction, such as the fake front "pleats" that serve no functional purpose other than design. Another example of this simplification is the way the sleeves are attached to the shoulders. On most denim jackets there would be a double row of top stitching to reinforce the seam, but that is missing on this jacket.

Some close-up shots of the cuffs on the late '70s - early '80s Sears Roebucks-type denim jacket I finished recently.
The lighter denim jacket is the original Roebucks jacket, the darker denim one is my self-made jacket.
The finish of the cuffs is extremely bulky, as you can see in the third photo - 15 layers of denim!
There are plenty of other, far less bulky, ways of finishing the cuffs, but in this case I wanted to use the same method as on the original jacket.

I finally had some time to finish the late '70s - early '80s Sears Roebucks-type denim jacket I started making about a month ago.
The 3rd photo shows the finished jacket next to an original Roebucks jacket.
It's not an exact copy in terms of materials, size, shape and fit, but the construction is exactly the same in both jackets. I'll show some examples in subsequent posts.

Making of a late '70s - early '80s Sears Roebucks-type denim jacket.
With the sleeves attached to the body, the remaining sewing steps are:
- attaching the sleeve cuffs
- closing up the sleeves and side seams
- attaching the waist band

I wanted to finish this while in Tokyo, but I got busy with some other things, and am now back at work in Osaka. The remaining steps require my chainstitch machine in Tokyo, so they will have to wait for a month or so until my next trip home ...

With the front and back panels attched at the shoulders and the collar set in, it starts to look like a jacket.

Next is the construction of the back panel. All seams are lapped on the Union Special 51400. The back and front panels are now ready to be assembled.

I am making use of the Golden Week holidays in Japan to make another denim jacket—this time based on a Sears Roebucks jacket from the late '70s or early '80s.
The standout characteristic of this jacket is the simplification of its construction. Most notably, the front "pleats" have been replaced with two simple rows of stitches that don't even extend up to the front yoke—they stop just beyond the edges of the front pockets, under which they're hidden anyway. They no longer serve any functional purpose; they exist purely as a design detail.
The history of workwear construction is deeply tied to increasing production efficiency—a constant balancing act between durability and ease of manufacture. The "fake" pleats on this jacket take this to an extreme, resulting in a garment I find both appalling and fascinating.

The last photo shows the original Roebucks jacket.

A look on the inside of the 1960s Western-style jeans I made last week. I'm always more interested in the inside than the outside, as it says a lot about the construction of the jeans.
