Tell Peet’s Coffee to Drop the Non-Dairy Milk Upcharge!

There’s no doubt about it: the world is shifting away from cow’s milk for more compassionate, sustainable, and inclusive non-dairy options! Dairy cows are forced into a cycle of suffering and misery to produce milk, which also has a devastating impact on the environment. With Starbucks’ groundbreaking decision to stop charging extra for plant-based milks, the writing is on the wall for all other coffee chains. Tell Peet’s Coffee to drop the non-dairy milk upcharge at all locations today! Cows held captive by the dairy industry are stuck in a cycle of suffering and misery to steal their milk. Confined to factory farms, they are forced to exist in filthy, overcrowded conditions and are denied everything they need to thrive. Since cows only produce milk after giving birth, humans violate and forcefully impregnate cows through artificial insemination. Mother cows give birth after nine months of pregnancy and their newborn calves are stolen from them immediately or shortly after they are born. Mother cows experience profound grief due to being separated from her babies and the milk intended for their calves is taken. Mother cows are repeatedly impregnated until they can no longer produce enough milk to be profitable. After a lifetime of misery, they are sent to slaughter at a fraction of their natural lifespan. Female calves born into the dairy industry are typically sentenced to the same cruel fate as their mothers to produce milk. If the calves are born males, they are shoved into tiny crates to restrict the movement of their muscles. This cruel practice keeps the young calves’ muscles from developing and toughening before they are slaughtered and their body parts sold as “veal.” Calves may also be killed and discarded, raised and slaughtered for meat, exported to other locations, or used for labor. Thankfully, plenty of plant-based milk options are available that do not involve the torture and suffering of animals. Unfortunately, some of the most accessible coffee chains choose to charge extra for these vegan options, creating barriers between compassionate choices and consumers. The plant-based milk upcharge is considered to be discriminatory against vegans, as well as populations with a high prevalence of lactose intolerance including African, East Asian, Indigenous American, and Middle Eastern populations. Peet's Coffee operates over 280 locations in the United States and over 100 in China and Dubai. The chain typically charges an additional $0.80 for substituting dairy milk with plant-based alternatives such as oat, almond, or soy milk. *prices may vary due to location or promotions OH FOR PEET’S SAKE! Compassionate, inclusive options should not cost extra! TAKE ACTION: Tell Peet’s Coffee to drop the non-dairy milk upcharge today! Email: Send a letter to Eric Lauterbach, President and CEO of Peet's Coffee by signing this page. Anyone have advice on making barley milk? I feel like mine keeps coming out simultaneously too barley-ey and too watery.

I've recently learnt that the environmental implications of ruminants are more complex than simple, methane = bad. Then, remember that plant-based milks are ultra-processed food products. If only this stuff were as simple as rocket science.

How chemical reactions deplete nutrients in plant-based drinks

A University of Copenhagen study of plant-based drinks reveals a common issue: they are lacking in proteins and essential amino acids compared to cow’s milk. The explanation lies in their extensive processing, causing chemical reactions that degrade protein quality in the product and, in some cases, produce new substances of concern.A University of Copenhagen study of plant-based drinks reveals a common issue: they are lacking in proteins and essential amino acids compared to cow’s milk.
