Brigid’s Cross Tutorial

"In Ireland #Candlemas (or pagan #Imbolc) is celebrated as St Brigid’s feast day. It’s a holiday where the returning of the light and the nature after the dark winter is celebrated. A typical symbol for this holiday is the Brigid’s cross (or Brigit’s cross), a four-ended cross made of straw or rushes, with a knotted pattern in the middle. Traditionally the crosses are made on the holiday and set over doorways and windows to protect the home from fire or any kind of harm.

There are many different variations of Brigid’s crosses. The Brigid’s Cross tutorial I’m showing here is the most common."

#Straw #Weaving – #Pentagram Star

"I’m still very into my straw weaving projects! 🙂 This time I did a pentagram star with wheat and rye. I used the same technique in my Lavender Star Tutorial.

Materials:
I used 10 pieces of wheat stalks (available here*) and 5 pieces of rye for my star. For the straw ring you’ll need several straight pieces of straw and some thick floral wire. Additionally I decorated everything with some ribbons."

#StrawPlaiting – Countryman’s Favour

"The Countryman’s Favour or the #HarvestKnot is one of the most traditional and easiest #StrawCrafts. The shape of the knot resembles a heart, and it was often presented as a love token. Young men would make those favours at harvest time for their loved ones. If she was wearing the Harvest Knot next to her heart, her love was returned.

A Countryman’s Favour is a simple #CornDolly made of 2, 3 or more straw stalks. You can use several #plaiting techniques for this craft.

You’ll need:
- natural wheat straw stalks

I loved this segment of #VictorianFarm [begins at 7:30] -- #plaiting straw, with the end result being a straw hat! I've made #Brigid's crosses with straw, but always to wanted to make something bigger -- like a basket. I also found some web pages and videos for smaller projects that I'll be posting today!
