@jago @janrosenow There are already several #CavernThermalEnergyStorage sites in Finland but most are repurposed oil bunkers. This makes them cheaper.

Helsinki 300.000m³

Vaasa 210.000m³

Oulu 190.000m³

There is also a large 500.000m³ #PitThermalEnergyStorage site planned in Hyvinkää. Costing 20M€ it is close to the Danish 30€/m³ benchmark.

Heat caverns in Mustikkamaa have now been filled

The filling of underground heat caverns in Mustikkamaa with water has been completed this week, and the use of the heat caverns for heating homes in Helsinki is a step closer.

The #PitThermalEnergyStorage PTES solution used in Denmark appears significantly cheaper than #CavernThermalEnergyStorage CTES which is popular in Finland.

The 200.000m³ #PTES in Vojens costs about 30 €/m³ whereas #CTES #Varanto in Vantaa costs 200 €/m³.

However, PTES is not pressurised and thus limited to 95°C while #Varanto CTES reaches 140°C, increasing both storage capacity and value of heat.

Seasonal pit heat storage: Cost benchmark of 30 EUR/m³ | Solarthermalworld

Denmark has had a successful learning curve regarding to the cost and efficiency of seasonal pit heat storage, which is used to store sunlight in summer for heating purposes in […]

🇫🇮 Finnish govt grants €90m subsidies to demo projects:
-€4m to produce 32GWh/a biogas from agro- and biowaste & sludge and capture CO2
-€27m for renewable methane production (740GWh/a) using green hydrogen
-€19m for a 30MW heat pump station that can produce #districtHeat from outdoor air at -20°C
-€8m for 4MW electrolyser with heat recovery for district heat
-€8m for #PitThermalEnergyStorage to store waste heat in summer and use it in winter

Some companies already offer promising 'low-tech' energy solutions that were not so attractive when energy was cheap and abundant:

#Heliostorage uses #BoreholeThermalEnergyStorage to make #SolarHeat available in winter. Similar to #DrakeLanding in 🇨🇦

#SavoSolar has built many large #PitThermalEnergyStorage systems in Central Europe, but not yet Finland.

We should quickly ramp up such technologies.

How It Works

How it Works Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage is the most energy efficient solution for the heating of buildings. It can be deployed from small to large scale and allows the heat production to be located close to where it is needed.  How Does Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage Work? The cycle begins in spring when the […]
