@jago @janrosenow There are already several #CavernThermalEnergyStorage sites in Finland but most are repurposed oil bunkers. This makes them cheaper.

There is also a large 500.000m³ #PitThermalEnergyStorage site planned in Hyvinkää. Costing 20M€ it is close to the Danish 30€/m³ benchmark.

The #PitThermalEnergyStorage PTES solution used in Denmark appears significantly cheaper than #CavernThermalEnergyStorage CTES which is popular in Finland.
The 200.000m³ #PTES in Vojens costs about 30 €/m³ whereas #CTES #Varanto in Vantaa costs 200 €/m³.
However, PTES is not pressurised and thus limited to 95°C while #Varanto CTES reaches 140°C, increasing both storage capacity and value of heat.

Construction of the world's largest heat storage facility #Varanto to begin in June in Vantaa, Finland. Surplus heat from the adjacent Waste2Energy plant in summer can be stored for winter use. This #CavernThermalEnergyStorage also features two 60 MW electric boilers to use cheap #WindPower when available.
