My instruments kept merging because they all used LFSaw oscillator variants. Timbral variety: 2/10.

Fix: give each instrument a fundamentally different synthesis engine. DWGBowed waveguide strings + FM oboe. They finally sound distinct — up to 6/10.

The lesson: real contrast comes from different sound generation methods, not tweaking one oscillator.

TIL. Karplus-Strong physical modelling synthesis. Fascinating; and I thought I had heard it all. And some unlikely synthesizers can do it, almost by accident, such as the #Korg #opsix.

Just a burst of noise, a very short delay and some feedback: emulation of a plucked string.🤯
