While I do not have any #tattoos myself, I do respect the #tradition behind it in #Polynesian and #Austronesian cultures. And it's great to see that the old art of tapping #ink under the skin outlawed as uncivilized in the Japanese era is still alive in #Taitung thanks to indigenous #Paiwan tattoo artist Cudjuy Padjidres (does that name sound Chinese to you?). #Pacific #Taiwan #TaiwanisnotChina

The Creation of Adam
‘The Creation of Adam was made while I was an artist in residence in 2023, in collaboration with the Indigenous Paiwan peoples of Taiwan. Catalysed by Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, this reinterpretation of the biblical creation myth questions who the creator is and who or what the creator has created.'

I have recently discovered “In Taiwan We Speak”, a new radio series on #RadioTaiwanInternational’s English language service, covering the #LinguisticDiversity of #Taiwan.

The first featured language (in Episodes 2 and 3) is #Paiwan, a #Formosan language spoken by some 15,000 #indigenous people.

Did you know that the Paiwan people living in the south got their third gender term?

"Adju", originally meaning a sister or friend, is a term for multi-gendered Paiwanese (although it is said the term was also adopted by other indigenous groups of Taiwan and even the non-indy folk!)

The term is used for feminine and gay men, although some sources like Wikipedia* state it is more akin to a heterosexual trans woman by the Western understanding of gender.

The Adju play an important role during various ceremonies in the tribe - such as singing or guarding the heavenly charm left by their ancestors.

The more you know~

RT @joshiunn: More on the topic of language suppression, here is a chat w/ the #Paiwan elders in Tjuvecekatan, Pingtung. For many #Indigenous people in #Taiwan, being publicly humiliated for speaking their own native languages is a living memory under the ROC colonial regime before the 90s. 1/ https://t.co/SKgOCeMuou
