Pacific Electric: Mumford and Sons' Ben Lovett on Opening New L.A. Club

Pacific Electric, an important addition to L.A.'s club scene, will also help create a new culture hub near downtown, says its visionary, Ben Lovett.

Spent some time in #Torrance today. This bridge is a local landmark--#PacificElectric / #RedCar lines used to go both over and under it. The tracks underneath are still active, the ones on top are no longer connected to anything.
Also hit an antique shop where I picked up some #78rpm records for $1 each.

A #Cyanotype print of a found (on eBay) negative. This is a #PacificElectric "blimp" on the Long Beach line.
The negative was fairly dark/overexposed, so I had to expose the cyanotype paper for 1hr 15mins to get this (somewhat late afternoon, though; would probably be quicker closer to noon).
It's the same size negative as I get from the #KodakBrownie, though I suspect the photographer had a better camera than that.

From another old negative, a #PacificElectric/#RedCar "blimp".

(These trains originally ran in the East Bay, and for a few years, over the Bay Bridge to SF).

It's sad to remember the #RedCar, the #PacificElectric #lightrail and trolley system that used to exist in Southern California. Can you imagine being able to move between LA, OC, Riverside, and San Bernardino without car or pollution? It was once possible, and it should be again.
@indigoparadox Oh huh, I haven’t heard that particular bit of history! I know a lot of railways were dismantled due to pressure from the car lobby, though. (With the #PacificElectric Railway in Los Angeles as the most infamous example.)
Since #LASnow is on everyone's minds this week, here's a picture of a #PacificElectric Red Car rolling through the winter wonderland of #SanMarino during the last SoCal-wide snowstorm of January 1949:

Crazy how like 100 years ago the same train route from Long Beach to Los Angeles was 5-11 minutes faster than it is today. It's like we've progressed backwards. We really need to bring back the Pacific Electric network back to SoCal. #PacificElectric #Transit #LosAngeles #LongBeach #SoCal
