No mention of the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus?
The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (Oct. Rododensis) is another recently re-discovered species, thought extinct since the late 1800s.
Efforts are being made to increase their population.
The original range for the PNW Tree Octopus was the entire north Pacific rim, including Alaska, Siberia, and Japan.
They were very popular as companions in feudal Japan, and much literature and art can be found.
For World Octopus Day, I'd like to highlight the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (Oct. Rododensis).
Long thought to have gone the way of the American Bison, Tree Octopi have been spotted recently in remote parts of Cascadia, giving hope that a breeding program might bring them back.
If you see an octopus in the woods, leave it be. I know the urge to bring it home as a pet is strong: theyre social, smart, and not shy.
But they get very large, very quickly.
