Musical Interlude: I love the 2000 film SONGCATCHER, about a female musicologist recording the songs of Appalachian mountain people. It had two soundtrack albums, one of actual vintage recordings that inspired the film, and another of "songs from and inspired by." Normally the latter makes me roll my eyes, but this time it was traditional mountain ballads performed by current country artists like Roseanne Cash, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, and Deana Carter, with a couple original songs. This one knocked my socks off...a duet ballad between one of country's superstars and one of the film's actors, a then-unknown Emmy Rossum, as a dialogue between a mother and daughter. A song that deserves to be better known.

"When Love is New," performed by Dolly Parton and Emmy Rossum.
