How Lakewood Church shooter bought rifle despite mental illness is being probed

Authorities say they’re reviewing how the shooter who opened fire at a Houston megachurch was able to legally purchase and obtain the AR-style rifle used in the attack despite a years-long criminal record and a history of mental illness. Public records show that Genesse Moreno faced several charges over the years, including for theft, forgery and assault. However, a local prosecutor says a misdemeanor conviction for unlawfully carrying a weapon wouldn’t have prevented her under state law from purchasing more guns. Moreno, 36, opened fire in celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church on Sunday before being gunned down by security officers.

Shooter killed at Joel Osteen's Lakewood church in Houston

Police say a woman in a trenchcoat opened fire with a long gun inside celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s Texas megachurch before being gunned down by two off-duty officers who confronted her. The afternoon shooting at the Houston megachurch sent worshippers scrambling out of the building between busy Sunday services. Authorities say the woman was dead and a 5-year-old boy with her was critically wounded by gunfire. They also say a 57-year-old man was wounded. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner praised the officers for their quick actions. Osteen says the shooting could have been much worse if it had happened during the larger 11 a.m. service.
