Mason Prentiss (1816-1881), was a gunsmith, machinist, and inventor in Washington County, New York. He patented his first vise in 1868. The Prentiss Vise was arguably the most popular vise ever produced, and continued in production into the 1950s. It is still popular and widely collected.

My great grandfather’s 18” jointer hand plane. I think it was made around 1910.

I flattened the sole — that took awhile.

I’m using it here with a shallow-angled jig holding two very thin panels for a guitar I built. The plane is being used to make the edges extremely flat so the panels can be glued edgewise.

The shallow-angle on the jig is so that the actual cutting point traverses the plane knife so that the edge dulls evenly.

Thinking about building myself a version of Schwarz’s Anarchist’s Tool Chest, and doing an inventory of my tools since this’ll be my largest project. Noticed I still haven’t taken the pits out of my ~1917 Disston No 4. Took a few passes on its flanks today, and ran the triangle along its teeth. Still looks fantastic for its age.

Keeping it Old-Tool: REPL habits of a grug-brained Clojure programmer

Is demo of Grug Clojure code vibe. He no catch onto cloud LLM magics for some reason. Still prefer program with only brain-muscles. Prefer use Grug language standard library and standard dev tools. Prefer make and use all byte on local disk. Maybe luddite, maybe obsolete. Grug no mind. Fine with how he code. Besides, Grug like muscles. Hope maybe you see tip, trick, tactic to steal. Take what can use, no take what no can use.

@LoraHughes it's a tool box for instruments.

Look what fell into my pickup, this week. 🙂 It had one previous owner and then sat on a shelf for a few decades.

This may be the smallest made paper cutter in the world. It was too cute to pass up for $2.

Picked up a box of old tools at an auction yesterday.

I picked up this ½" letter punch set recently. Paid too much, but I plan to use it to make vegetable planting markers for Liz.
