"I carry a river. It is who I am... we are saying our name. We are telling a story of our existence. The river runs through the middle of my body... Translated into English, ‘Aha Makav means the river runs through the middle of our body, the same way it runs through the middle of our land.
This is a poor translation, like all translations..."

Mimata's Okimizu River

Where's Mamushi?

During the busy weekend I drove Maron and the fishing pole down to try getting Invasive Fish for the birds. While stepping into the weeds to pee I notice a perfectly still snake coiled up. It looked dead, enough to make one curious enough to touch and check. But the Mamushi snakes are poisonous so "caution is the better part of valor": any other proverb that helps you avoid doing stupid things can help.. There weren't any decent sticks around, the river sides get burnt down once a year. So I just yanked out the weed with the roots that the snake was coiled on. While doing that I lost track of the little cutie and was worried it had fled or I wouldn't be able to find it to verify anything. But it was just perfectly still in a different configuration but closer.. Now I'll never confuse a AoDaiSho Japanese rat snake: It's not just the color and body shape. They react and move very differently. The rat snake flees quck and sinuous, might do half-heard snapping. The Mamushi is still then seems serious bout darting forward to snap, the body flattens on the ground and almost seems like to become a long triangular shape. And I guess the head and jaw is bigger as expected for poisonous snakes?

Reading up on it now: would have been a big pain to get bitten. I was wondering if it could be ignored like bee stings or something but.. a week!?! would really mess up the schedule, probably hurt a lot too.. It was luck I guess that Maron was interested in something else during the verification...

> Every year, 2000–3000 people in Japan are bitten by a mamushi. Bitten victims typically require one week of treatment in a hospital. Severe bites require intensive care, and approximately 10 victims die annually.... This species is similar to the cottonmouths and copperheads (Agkistrodon sp.) of the Americas, and it was long considered part of the same group..

All the cannonball splash jump practice at the river put me in need of a down day: too much fun and now the ears and back won't work for a day or two.. But it was still good to do a quick bike-ride down to the river with Maron: _The First Water is The Body_ . Even at 8AM it was too hot to be comfortable. I should have avoided doing on-lines stuff and rushed down at around 6 or so, but then I might have forgotten to hang the wash with the Silky Help..

She saw an old-farmer's K-truck in the distance ad thought a chance to play was coming up. When the guy finally came buy he ignored us but maybe I missed the eye contact opportunity being in the state where you need a few days to recover from the vacation...

I'll have to remember to visit this river, the watershed for the house more often. Maybe go early, before the heat. But that's a good time to get yard work done. Maybe just wait for the fall. I guess jumping into a nice little forested river serves the same sort of purpose but that beautiful river isn't quite in the immediate watershed where I live.. That water probably runs into the same OyodoGawa river that this Okimizu river runs into... Hmmm. I wonder what Natalie Diaz would say?

Kirishima and Crow and Egret, and river... and the mountains on the other side of our basin that feed our river... There's a big carp in the river that I sort of feel friendly toward, but also sort of want to spear or catch somehow and feed it to the dog, cats and birds... Conflicted, but not really... must be a way to reconcile the urges... #Kirishima #OkimizuRiver #霧島 #沖水川 #三股町霧島 #三股町沖水川

In the evening of Holiday Monday, after some shopping (exhausting!!) and using the goods to try fencing the birds in (to keep them out of the road and the neighbors' lands), we got down to the big river for the first time in months. For months it was too hot to walk very far, out in the open to be baked in the plain at the bottom of this bowl... But it's nice now... And Maron jumped right back into the river...

Maron in Okimizu River. Something surprised her in there and she came runnig out, but went back in again a little later.. I wonder what it was?
