🛰️ Galileo #OSNMA uses Timed Efficient Stream Loss-tolerant Authentication (TESLA) chains for authentication which is a very elegant solution to work around the limited size available in GNSS packets. A signature, even less so a post-quantum one, would certainly not fit, so they are constructed on symmetric cryptography.

But TESLA chains do need to be renewed at some cadence. It's interesting to see how that's done operationally in a real world system.

Tests of Galileo OSNMA underway

Galileo has started testing Open Service Navigation Message Authentication (OSNMA) in the signal-in-space, allowing the first-ever OSNMA-protected position fix to be successfully computed. Testing will continue over the next months, ahead of a so-called “public observation” phase. This is the first-ever transmission of authentication features in open GNSS signals of a global navigation system.
