I know that standing in a checkout line will soon be obsolete but until then, I will never understand why we have not normalized having a single queue to wait for the next available checkout. There were multiple registers in my small town grocery open. I chose badly.

The older lady in front of me was clearly shopping for multiple families because she needed to keep things separate for separate receipts. And she needed a money order. And I watched the lane immediately to my left sail by before sheepishly moving my items to the other conveyor.

I felt like I was calling her slow but all I wanted was to get home. I have no issue with someone who was clearly helping her neighbors/family/whatever. Sigh!
