#Symposium IRL 2024: “The #Qualia problem”
Once again this year, the “Friends of Philosophy” “in real life (IRL)” symposium panel discussion took place, which I was extremely pleased about.
So I wanted to take this opportunity to write a short review and thank all the participants.
Axel had arrived a day early so that we were able to discuss the upcoming joint #projects for our Zoomposium YouTube channel in our intensive #working meeting and continue working on our new format “The Kaleidoscope of #Science”.
As this year's organizer, I was fortunately also able to find a suitable conference venue for the weekend, a “knight's castle with bower ;-)” in beautiful #Münsterland, to which Philipp and Christian then also joined us.
The very interesting and witty discussions on this year's symposium topic “The Qualia Problem” were, in my opinion, a real enrichment for all participating guest speakers. However, the problem (no, not a “hard problem” ;-) could not be solved in the end.
The well-known and renowned German #neurophysiologist and #brain researcher Wolf Singer had already pointed this out in one of our earlier Zoomposium interviews on the subject of the “constitution of #consciousness” from a neuroscientific and philosophical perspective. Here is just the short as a preview:

However, it wasn't about the #solution, but about the #process, so that the different points of view perhaps became more understandable. The fact that qualia also has something to do with #enjoyment was - in my opinion - clearly demonstrated to all participants in an empirical study on the “pleasures of the Münsterland”.
In any case, I am already looking forward to our next “Symposium-Tafelrunde IRL 2025” on another exciting #topic, which we could perhaps continue at the “sources of occidental thought on the distant shores of Hyperion”.
Kind regards
Dirk
