#Nepenthes mirabilis, a member of the #Nepenthaceae sometimes referred to as the common swamp pitcher-plant, is the most widespread species in the genus. This plant was sold to me as Nepenthes mirabilis ‘Red’. It features a mottled red pitcher body.

Deadly Allure
Much like flowers, many carnivorous plants utilize ultraviolet light (UV) reflectance patterns to lure insects. Although an abundant component of sunlight, UV is invisible to humans but it is highly conspicuous to the insect eye. Here at nightfall, a UV torch reveals a normally hidden fluorescence of blue light on the pitchers of Nepenthes mirabilis.

#Nepenthes glandulifera, a species of pitcher plant endemic to the Hose Mountains, Sarawak, is so named because it is covered in numerous black nectar glands. Apparently, the glands are even present on the seed pods! This species stays compact and grows reasonably well in household conditions.

#Nepenthes truncata is a lowland to intermediate pitcher plant species from the Philippines. These plants grow large enough to trap mice, though capturing mammals is a rare occurrence, and they cannot digest bone.
