Bust of Piet Hein, Hendrick de Keyser (II) (attributed to), 1636
Piet Hein fought in the Netherlands, the Mediterranean Sea, Asia, Africa, and America as a seaman. But he only becomes truly famous when he captures the Spanish Silver Fleet off the coast of Cuba in September 1628. For the Spanish the loss of that fleet is a financial catastrophe and for the Dutch Republic, quite the opposite, a tremendous triumph. Hein becomes enormously popular among the Dutch and is honoured everywhere. Just a year later, Hein dies in a skirmish with privateers from Ostend in the English Channel.

Saul and the Witch of Endor, Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, 1526
Fearing the outcome of a battle, Saul, king of the Israelites, consulted the fortune-telling witch of Endor. The prophecy came true: Saul lost the battle, but shortly before he was to be killed, he threw himself on his sword. His suicide – in the middle background – is a warning against witchcraft. In the foreground is a Witches’ Sabbath: the fortune-teller sits within a chalk circle, surrounded by other witches, satyrs, and imaginary figures.

Portico and pediment from the Huydecoper house, Philips Vinckboons (II), 1639
This portico is from the entrance hall of a grand house on the Singel canal in Amsterdam, designed by the
architect Vinckboons in 1639. Both the exterior and the interior of the building were classicizing in style. The house was commissioned by Joan Huydecoper, mayor of Amsterdam and a prominent art lover.

Reliquary in the form of a triptych, anonymous, c. 1400 - 1410
This miniature altar is one of the most beautiful examples of French goldsmiths’ work from the period around 1400. It doubtless belonged to someone associated with the Paris court. Seeing Christ’s tormented body, the owner could meditate on his sufferings at any time.
