Tama Potaka for Nat leader! I'm serious. You can tell from the careful way he speaks that he doesn't approve of the cocktail government Mr Potatohead has mixed up. But he's responsible and loyal enough to keep his kōrero away from any explicit criticism of his party leader, or the coalition he's part of;
I think he could be a fantastic leader for a new generation of progressive Nats.

Those decrying cultural spaces on campus for Māori and Pacifica know very well that "segregation" is not what they are. Some of them were alive in the 1960s when real segregation policies still excluded Māori from many public spaces. Despite being staunchly anti-racist since high school, even I didn't know about these until the recent documentary about them.

Listening to David Seymour is so irritating. The strawman arguments he uses to dodge hard questions are irritating. The facile arguments he uses to spin corporatist policy as being progressive are irritating. The way he spins assimilationist policy as "Tino Rangatiratanga" is especially irritating. Most irritating of all is the smug, self-satisfied tone in which he delivers it all.
The purpose of Saturday's Hui called by the #Kingitanga was to rally the opposition to the assimilationist agenda represented by ACT's bill. Top boost morale, and refresh the relationships - both personal and institutional - that effective resistance will depend on. Also to demonstrate the flaxroots' capacity to mobilise (eg for a mass hikoi). All of which it seems to have done very effectively if Mihi Forbes' piece is anything to go by.
#MihingarangiForbes is a national treasure. National's Tama Potaka starts trotting out the talking point about "tax relief" for the "squeezed middle" and without blinking an eye, she asks;
"What about the trampled poor? What about the 244,000 Māori that are earning less than $30,000, and you've already been here with your protein bars, because you know that it's $4 a week. I mean, is that fair?"
