Found this excellent list of #MetroidII speed run techniques. There are pages for other #Metroid games too, but I have Return of Samus still in my mind.
Speed runs of older games (in general) is a great way to learn about technical aspects of a game. Even if you aren't personally trying to go fast, I think learning out how a game works makes it more fun. At least, it does for me!
@scribblemacher Reading this thread led me to try Metroid II again as well. I played through it twice in the '90s, and I can't recall whether I've player it through again since. I replaced battery a few years ago, so I'm already starting from a fresh save.
Now I have my spouse's old Super Nintendo and Super Game Boy, so I have a new way to experience it!
The color scheme reminds me of CGA palettes, except I don't hate it.

Ok, so in previous #VideoGameClub months I barely made a dent. This month, I FINISHED by the 3rd day! Total time was 5:01. I forgot how adorable the little guy at the end is.
Considering this is a Game Boy game, the build up to the final boss is pretty great. The atmosphere is very tense, there's a fun twist with the Metroid counter, and the music is somewhere between sci-fi and horror. Metroid II is arguably better because of the Game Boy's limitations.
The final boss took two tries. I ended up using the escape route under the queen to resupply. I finished her off with a missile in the mouth, with my health around 60.
I'm feeling a burning desire. I may start another Metroid game now...
Down to 6 Metroids, with 5 energy tanks, 220 missiles, and the screw attack. This area has all 4 beams available. I opted for Spazer because I seem to miss more with plasma. I can't remember if I need Ice for the final sequence.
Just finished area 5 (not sure if these have official names. Area 3 has a section that's only accessible after finishing area 4, so maybe I'm in area 6...? I think Nintendo Power had an article with maps and "official" names that I'll look up when I'm done.)
I absolutely hate the xenomorph-looking Metroids that were introduced in this area. They get really close and tend to stay above you, but you can't hit their feet. To be honest, I like the tension of finding a Metroid more than I enjoying fighting them. All the fights are basically battles of attrition where I just fire missiles like an idiot and hope I hit something.
I accidentally played #MetroidII for like 3 hours straight. I don't remember the map at all, but I've stumbled on the Varia, spring ball, Space Jump, High Jump, Spazer, and 3 energy tanks.
What has surprised me is how hard missiles are to come by. Enemies rarely seem to drop them. I probably got more from expansions rather than drops.
I'm also surprised by how good the sound is. The little "oh shit" jingle that plays when a Metroid sees you has made me jump more than once. I also really like the quiet parts where you're mostly just hearing the pitter-patter of Samus's feet.
Getting ready to start #VGCMay2025 with #MetroidII. I last played this in 2003, after getting a Game Boy Player for a GameCube. I played it after Fusion, so the idea of a linear Metroid was not crazy to me. I played the remake for 3DS when it came out, but that game is so different, it barely resembles the original.
Last time I played Metroid II, I just fumbled around and figured it out. This time, I'm going to at least make a rudimentary map (hence the graph paper)
