Located roughly 5,500 light years away in the constellation Sagittarius, Messier 17 represents a premier example of an H II region where active star formation occurs. Also known as the Omega or Swan Nebula, this interstellar cloud contains a dense cluster of young, hot stars that emit intense ultraviolet radiation. This energy ionizes the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing it to glow while simultaneously sculpting the majestic ridges of cold molecular gas and cosmic dust. Observations of this celestial factory allow astronomers to study the complex physical processes that govern the birth and early evolution of stellar systems within our galaxy. #Astronomy #Messier17 #Astrophysics #NASA #StarFormation

A nearby star factory known as Messier 17 lies some 5,500 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this 1.5 degree wide field-of-view would span about 150 light-years. Saturday night was particularly clear and still, so I made use of the late rising moon to shoot Messier 17, the Omega or Swan Nebula.

Recently Dwarflab have updated the firmware and app for the DwarfII significantly. A new sky atlas function makes it easier to locate and target objects, and updates to the stacking algorithms have made huge differences to the resulting images.

589x15s@gain 80 (I shot 600 frames, but 11 were dropped), postprocessed in Snapseed.
