unspeakablehorrorSomething I cannot emphasize enough if you want to better understand what's happening in the world and the geopolitics driving it is to read from multiple different sources, and always be trying to increase your base of sources. And there's nothing wrong with looking at easy to access sources, at more mainstream sources, as long as you don't stop there. Expand your perspective by understanding the diversity of perspectives out there. Go beyond 'I listen to X voices' by just passively accepting the few voices in that group who get amplified by social media influencers or featured by mainstream media (and who may in fact often be the worst voices to be listening to when it comes to advocacy for that group), and go looking for the voices that don't.
Use social media as one jumping off point to expand your exposure to different news sources and to smaller voices who will likely never get into the news, much less the mainstream media. The social media landscape poses many challenges for distinguishing true and false information, but this can also be said of traditional news, especially mainstream media. There is no substitute for critical thinking. The strength of social media, though, is in the much wider and more varied spectrum of perspectives that you will find on it. Take advantage of that. It can be invaluable resource if you take the time to seek out and sift through those perspectives.
There will never be any source you where you can simply uncritically accept everything it says. You have to learn about the source itself, try to understand both its strengths and its failings. But at the end of the day, it's not a question of whether the information is out there. It is. It's a question of whether you will take the time and effort to seek it out.
