I've just finished reading Jonathan Spence's "The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci", an inventively organized study of the life of a leading early Jesuit missionary in Ming China.

Now I want to read something substantial on the Rites Controversy.

Suggestions welcome!

One of my favorite historical people is Matteo Ricci. He joined the Jesuits at a young age and spent several years in Goa in India before traveling to his intended destination of Macau.

Upon his arrival, the Catholic mission in China had limited success. There were few converts and the emperor did not allow the missionaries inland.

Unlike his colleagues, Ricci spent time studying the language and culture of China. He became an expert in the Chinese classics. 1/x

I recently went over a tribute I wrote for Matteo Ricci. He was an amazing scholar of Chinese born over 400 years ago who was the first Western advisor to the Chinese court in the Forbidden City. See the tribute I posted below. #chinese #scholars #classicalchinese #matteoricci

I just re-watched a video from one of my YouTube channels. It's about Matteo Ricci, and the video was made at a statue of him in Macau. He was a man like Leonardo da Vinci in that he had incredible skills in many fields including amazing abilities in Chinese. He was one of the first Westerners ever to become an adviser to the Ming imperial court. He lived from 1552 to 1610. #chinese #matteoricci #history #sinology
