Way back in high school, at the very beginning of a class, there was the usual chatter among the kids.

One of the kids called across the room and asked me what my favorite song was. I said "Bongo, Bongo, Bongo, I Don't Want to Leave the Congo".

Everyone just stared at me. The teacher said "Oh, that is an old one!"

One of the other kids said "He just knows weird crap like that."

I think this might be the first piece of music in my memory. I swear I recall hearing it when I was still in a crib, and the melody itself brings such an intense nostalgia of childlike wonder at how music can evoke a feeling, it makes me cry sometimes. I don't hear it often, but it is strong for me.

Here's another one that takes me back. This must have been about 6th grade for me, and my mother had married again. We lived in a home with green carpet, as I recall.

This song was influential because of the allusion to teens having sex — something still mysterious to me. People also talked a lot about the breakdancing, which was new back then.

Also, I grew up in the burbs, so this inner cityscape was way foreign to me.

Here's one of my contributions.

This always takes me back to the late 80s and early 90s. In college I was living in a Gilded Age-style home with a slightly older gay couple, and there was wisteria growing out back. This song takes me back, and it always reminds me of wisteria.
