And here's the last one for me tonight.

This was high school for me. I think I wrote an essay in English AP called "Russians Are People, Too."

This is actually a very haunting song.

Y'all need to understand that nuclear war with Russia was a very real talked-about reality back then.
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Thirty years ago, we were so relieved to know we were the last generation ever to worry about nuclear war. Now we may be the first to actually see one happen.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon

Yes. I was convinced that I would likely die in my 40s in a nuclear war. Made it to 69 last month, so I'm happy that prediction hasn't come true.

Much the same as a teenager in the 80s, which was partly due to reading SF from 50s - 80s.
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon remember “Red Dawn”? Seeing it in the mid 80s, it was big, scary deal.
@MrBirch I do. I was trying to remember the title after I posted this.

The song was released in 1985, during the Reagan-era flare-up in US/Soviet relations. Tensions hadn't been that high in a while.
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Yep, try getting our kids to understand it. Remember the Midnight Oil album cover for Red Sails In The Sunset. Made it real-er for us down here
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Today I teach history. It is basically impossible to convey the zeitgeist of the cold war to people born after the early 80s. My students all think they would survive a nuclear war by hanging out in their basements for a few days. My advice: go outside and, if you see a missile, try to catch it; you do NOT want to live in the aftermath of a full-scale nuclear war.
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon The made-for-TV movie "The Day After" (1983) does a good job showing the aftermath. Apparently this film scared Ronald Reagan into rethinking some of his positions on nuclear war.
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Talk is cheap, try living next door to them and reading how they bombed a city only a thousand of km away, shot at fleeing civilians and tortured POWs on a daily basis from veritable sources.
