A reminder that if you're considering moving instances due to recent policy changes on #Threads, and would like to take your content with you as well as your social connections, #MastodonContentMover exists 👉 https://mastodoncontentmover.github.io/

It's not perfect. My hope when creating it was that the #Mastodon team would see the need for such portability and build in comparable functionality. Despite years of requests, that hasn't happened (feel free to add your voice): https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423

MastodonContentMover

#MastodonContentMover saves all the media you attached to your posts to an archive on your computer, with the text content of posts saved as XML files. It then allows you to repost the content to a different Mastodon instance and/or account.

It does not require command line access to any instances. You simply need to run it on your own computer, together with Java.

Someone running what appears to be an automated account to promote #Sharkey is now writing lies about the #MastodonContentMover tool (because it provides a way to move content between instances, which they want to say is something that can only be done with Sharkey).

They've blocked me so I can't respond to any of their lies, and are now writing slurs about my character behind the protection of their block, like this 👉 https://sakurajima.social/notes/9rt0li73zv

I've reported and blocked them, and their instance.

Linux Is Best (@Linux)

There is a 3rd party Mastodon to Mastodon importer in the works. But the developer seems sketchy to me. https://sakurajima.social/notes/9rszzmovxt RN: @[email protected] Lie? I got that directly from your source (see screenshot). All the things you said it cannot do, including the things it will never do. Your list seems accurate because Mastodon is not designed to save everything when you move. That is not a problem with your code, but an issue with Mastodon. Misskey, Sharkey, Ice Shrimp, and others do not lock you in place. No one needs to lie about that, and no one needs to convince their admin to install a 3rd party add-on. (📎1) RE: @[email protected] 1) It does save your files and 2) it runs on any computer that has a Java implementation. I wrote it, so please stop lying about it in some misguided attempt to promote #Sharkey. Sharkey has plenty going for it all by itself, without you having to spread lies maligning other tools and systems. RE: ...

A reminder that if you don't want to remain on a #Mastodon instance that federates with #Threads but also don't want to abandon your content, you can move it using #MastodonContentMover 👉 https://MastodonContentMover.github.io

(I need to update it to use the most recent version of the #BigBone library, but I don't want to try to rush that and mess something up, especially not right now, and the version that's there should still work fine. If you run into any problems with it please do let me know 🙏)

MastodonContentMover

@aktivismoEstasMiaLuo #MastodonContentMover is really quite different to #MastodonArchive. One moves the posts between instances, the other one archives them — either to a hard drive on a PC or to an html file that can be put onto a web site. Both are useful in their own way. I think what you've stumbled on here is the same misunderstanding you had in your previous post about what the tool does. Maybe it would be better to understand what something does before complaining about it in future.
In a lot of ways #mastodonContentMover (MCM) is similar to Kensenata’s #mastodonArchive (m-a). Notable difference: m-a can save mentions (very useful to have copies of posts by others that mention you). OTOH, m-a has some bugs that MCM may not. It’s a shame MCM apparently does not have a proxy parameter for Tor users because torsocks does not work on java’s JRE.
What a misleading name for this tool. The #mastodonContentMover name alone would normally cause me to dismiss the tool as I never want to *move* content (which implies automated removal of the source content that was copied). It’s only because of your lead-in description that caught my interest.
@SilverRainbow @danielscher
Various devs working on posts import.
#FediTips
#Firefish already can import from several #Fedi platforms including Mastodon, next planned import is #Twitter I believe.
#Pixelfed is working on Instagram posts import.
I think the
#Mastodon devs are working on posts import too?

#MastodonContentMover update: Release v0.01.06 is now available! 🔨 MastodonContentMover is a tool to save and then repost your #Mastodon posts (including images and videos) when you move instances. This version adds testing functionality and upgrades to the latest version of the #BigBone library. It also further increases extra throttling when reposting to public timelines, added in v0.01.04 following feedback from instance administrators. @SilverRainbow Very nice launch post! Hopefully some day it will become possible to move old posts to a new profile, rather than restarting from scratch. You can check #MastodonContentMover for the latest developments in this area but it is still work in progress.

Sorry it took longer than intended, but... #MastodonContentMover is now mentioned and linked in the #Mastodon official Github issue for supporting post migration 👉 https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423#issuecomment-1704306717

Please give it a thumbs up if you see fit 🙏
