Happy Baba Marta! A Bulgarian custom to welcome Spring, and to wish each other luck and happiness for the new season 🌻

The white and red ribbons are called Martenitsa. We exchange them for good luck 🍀

I was saving my last #martenitsa for an orange tree ☺️
I guess we can consider this full spring in #Valencia so off goes the #martenitsa 🌸
So, if you see someone wearing a red-and-white bracelet on their wrist (or several of those - you're supposed to wear each and every #Martenitsa you receive, at least for a while!), or a couple of red-and-white tassels on their clothes, they're either #Bulgarian, or they are a person who's dear to a Bulgarian, and they've been given the gift of care and hope ❤️🤍

And I just got this from one of my closest friends:

However, you can also take it off when you see a #stork - and then you're supposed to take your #Martenitsa and hide it under a rock. This is done so that "evil may sleep under a rock".
The tradition dictates that a #Martenitsa is worn until you see the first blossoming tree - and then you tie it onto its branches, to pay forward the protection of the Martenitsa onto the fruit-bearing trees. It's a fertility thing 😊
There are several #Martenitsa designs - the bracelet is the simplest one, and also the most inconspicuous. The classic Martenitsa is the Pizho-and-Penda (pictured here), which represents a white "boy" (Pizho) and a red "girl" (Penda). The combo is usually fastened to one's clothes and worn throughout March.

Happy Baba Marta, #Fediverse! 🔴⚪
