Marget Larsen, Joseph Magnin holiday box, 1963.

One of two gift boxes in our collection from the hip San Francisco mid-century department store, Joseph Magnin. As Sean Adams wrote for Design Observer, Larsen’s “maverick approach defied traditional and banal Christmas iconography, turning to geometry and a vibrant California palette. This simple shift—the rejection of established conventions—was and is a historically San Francisco approach.”

Marget Larsen, ad for Du Pont’s Color Council. As seen in Art Direction: The Magazine of Creative Advertising, vol. 11, no. 8, November 1959.

Larsen was super inventive in many ways – and, like most women in design history, criminally under-appreciated. We can’t wait to share more of her work.
