Men in precarious situations seemingly prefer to join a libertarian men's cult rather than question their economic reality characterised by austerity policies. John Trengove’s film struggles with conflicting ambitions, attempting both too much and too little as it sends its traumatized, repressed homosexual protagonist on a dramatic journey culminating in patricide. Unfortunately, its intense focus on the protagonist’s overloaded personal story leaves little room for a meaningful exploration of the phenomenon of the "manosphere“.

Als Debattenbeitrag zum Thema Incels kommt der Film locker 20 Jahre zu spät, denn er verkennt, an welchen Orten und in welchen Räumen derartige Radikalisierungen nicht nur möglich sind, sondern in großen Zahlen stattfinden. Heute immer noch den zum Mann gewordenen ungeliebten Jungen, der mit sich und seiner unterdrückten Homosexualität hadert und so schließlich ein toxisches Verhältnis zu Frauen und Hass auf schwule Männer entwickelt, als Erklärmuster heranzuziehen, ist nicht nur enorm problematisch, sondern auch ignorant und faul.
